Inspired by a dream, an elderly Fijian matriarch commands her grandchildren to throw one last great feast at which she will name her successor. But this simple task proves nearly impossible as the deep-seated rifts of a painful family legacy threaten to not only derail the feast, but to tear apart the family as well. Before it’s too late, the grandchildren must unite the family and prove to their Nanna Maria that her family will again know passion, joy and life, before – and after – she’s gone.

Ruby Dee stars as Nanna Maria, an elderly Fijian matriarch.   She is strong, passionate and filled with all the hope for the future of her family.  I was already a Ruby Dee fan but seeing her portrayal of this character has made me remember why I love her as an actress.  I have to admit I saw a little of my own Grandmother and Mother in her performance.

The supporting cast is exceptional.  Nanna Maria’s children, who are not currently in her good graces bring sibling rivalry to a whole new level.  As it turns out, over an 12 year old unresolved issue.  This proves to be more than some family members can cope with.

The five cousins, each gifted in their own way are lovable characters.  They are desperately trying to make Nanna Maria’s wish a reality but experiencing many obstacles mostly due in part by the irreconcilable differences between their parents.
